Physical Description
Postcard showing a photo of the fire at the Haskell Home for Orphans, 1909. The Haskell home was dedicated on January 26, 1894. It was built by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg to take care of orphaned children and teach them trades. Named for benefactress Caroline Haskell who donated $30,000 for its construction, the Haskell Home depended on charitable contributions for its operation. It burned on February 5, 1909 after a fire of suspicious origin. Three children were killed in the fire and are buried in the Haskell Home Cemetery on Hubbard Street. Written on back: This shows the south side after part of the east side had fallen in.
